![]() ![]() Though, really - the biggest problem with this book is that it reads like a good movie, and not necessarily a good book. Characters come in and are dropped just as quickly. While the surrounding characters are interesting and well-written, we don't get to see enough of them. This book, at +/- 350 pages would have been better if it were longer. ![]() That said, there are some bad parts as well. ![]() The fact that this book is science fiction is almost a coincidental thing - more than that, it's a good mystery and an exciting read with lots of different well-written parts, like: a plot worth spending time on, and a mystery you're interested in finding more about a main character you're both interested in and root for, and surrounding characters that you're interested in and that complement the story scary parts of the book that are terrifying thoughts more than bloody depictions of violence and gore interesting discussion of religion without going overboard about it, and discussion of other "big ideas". While reading the book, the thought that this would make a splendid movie was omnipresent. This has been my favorite science fiction book I've read, at the very least, in the last 6 months. ![]()

![]() ![]() A gifted quiltmaker who makes outstanding quilts never sells her wares, but gives them away to the poor. Ages 4-8.Ī sentimental tale overwhelmed by busy illustrations and rampant pedantry. Each section of text appears on a plain cream “block” with stitching around the edges, and the endpapers sport an array of labeled quilt patterns. De Marcken pays homage at every turn to the quiltmaker’s craft. The artwork achieves a dizzying, quilted look with lush full-page illustrations in cotton-candy colors sharing a spread with saucy vignettes “the king could not sleep” for instance, inspires a droll four-panel peek at the restless fellow tossing and turning in bed. ![]() Brumbeau’s overlong tale treads a well-worn trail here, hampered by bursts of overwrought prose (“the king’s great sunny laugh made green apples fall and flowers turn his way”). Finally he agrees to her demand, growing progressively happier with each thing that he gives away. ![]() The irate monarch twice attempts to punish her but both times she foils him. Rich but dissatisfied, a king demands a quilt from a gifted quiltmaker, but she refuses unless he gives away all his material possessions. As intricately worked as a patchwork quilt, de Marcken’s (Born to Pull) fanciful watercolors are the highlight of this somewhat pedestrian fable. ![]() ![]() ![]() The image has an African woman who like many images of Venus Anadyomene stands on an opened half-shell, but this black Venus is surrounded by white cherubs and moves across the Middle Passage, urged on by Triton. The title of the book comes from an image by British painter Thomas Stothard (1755–1834), an engraving of which served as the frontispiece of the 1801 edition of History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies by British politician Bryan Edwards, a staunch supporter of the slave trade who published a number of books describing the economy and history of the West Indies. ![]() ![]() Engraving by William Grainger of Thomas Stothard, Voyage of the Sable Venus from Angola to the West Indies, 1801. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The stories may be set in small towns but their range and depth are anything but trifling. Even her novel, Lives of Girls and Women, reads more like a series of semi-autobiographical episodes sharing a narrator, rather than an unbroken narrative.īorn in Wingham, Ontario, the majority of Munro’s stories are set in the Canadian province in which she grew up. Munro began her career publishing stories in literary magazines, selling her first at 18, before going on to publish collections including Open Secrets and The Love of a Good Woman. ![]() She has been called “Our Chekhov” by the American writer Cynthia Ozick. The announcement of Alice Munro as 2013’s winner of the Nobel Prize for literature marks the high point in the 82-year old writer’s long career, but also a significant recognition for the form with which she is so closely aligned, the short story. ![]() ![]() ![]() She agrees to accompany him to England in return for the truth about her origins, never suspecting the shattering revelations that await her there. But when the handsome, enigmatic Leander McLaughlin appears out of the blue, promising her the answers she so desperately wants, Jenna takes a leap of faith. She trusts no one, not since her mother s sudden death, not since her father s mysterious disappearance, and definitely not since she began exhibiting strange, superhuman abilities. She spent her childhood in hiding, on the run from someone or something her parents refused to discuss. Half a world away, on the sun drenched shores of Southern California, Jenna Moore’s past is shrouded in mystery. Beautiful, savage, and graced with the ability to shift from human to vapor to lethal predator, the Ikati are bound together by ancient bloodlines and a code of secrecy that punishes traitors with death. ![]() Deep within the primeval forests of southern England, a tribe of mysterious beings lives hidden from the everyday world. ![]() ![]() Scott and his brave crew died on the return, gallantly sacrificing themselves for each other, leaving poignant notes scrawled to posterity about being honored to show that Englishmen are still willing, in words taken from Tennyson “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” Beset by awful weather and bad luck, they made it, half-starved to the Pole, only to discover that Amundsen, the sneaky, underhanded Norwegian scoundrel, had dashed to the Pole ahead of them, robbing England of its deserved glory. ![]() Historically, at least in the English/American narrative, Scott was the bold Englishman whose scientific expedition set out to map and discover the wonders of Antarctica, including the South Pole. Figured it was time I sat down and read it. I kept running across “ The Last Place on Earth“, Roland Huntford’s controversial “expose” of the Amundsen-Scott race for the South Pole. But honestly, I’ve not spent the time writing – I’ve been reading. ![]() ![]() Remember how last week I warned you that I wasn’t going to be posting as much because I was going to try to start writing some non-blog stuff? Well, I kept up half of that bargain by not posting. ![]() ![]() ![]() I can't wait to find out what happens next, jumping straight into book 3. Even Mike got back on my good side, for sticking up for his brother. I loved all the side-characters.except for Cole's fucked up parents. I loved seeing how they got closer and closer and damn they were HOT. ![]() This book was awesome! I loved Cole and Jae together. I didn't even remember that name being in the book :P !!!īut you know what.I don't even care. ![]() Just when I thought I had everything figured out towards the end.it turned out I didn't even know who the killer was. The mystery part might have been a bit confusing and bodies were dropping left and right. Then, I remembered Susan telling me not to get too caught up in all the names, so I let it go and just enjoyed the story :) All Korean and all with weird names I couldn't remember or understand. I didn't know what was going on and there were so many people. I have a feeling I will be reading the books in this series in one sitting (maybe I will take a break to actually sleep). After finishing book 1, I jumped right into this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Her mere existence inside the literary world is disruptive in an industry that's long upheld the idea that the world's most well-regarded poets happened to only be white men. On the surface level, she's beyond the typical mold of what you'd expect a poet to look like-she's an immigrant woman of color who's regularly donning brightly hued gowns that are often adorned with sequins. Her entire career flies in the face of what constitutes a "traditional" writer in every way. And in writing poetry, there is the added pressure of adhering to traditional forms for your work to be deemed "art." The rules of style and stanzas are something that famous Punjabi poet Rupi Kaur understands but does not follow. ![]() In fashion, there are the expectations of how a woman "should" look to be deemed respectable. Poetry, much like fashion, has always had its set of rules. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. I just wish there was a little more for me to sink my teeth into. I used to really like this series, but I think it's gotten a little too fluffy for me. In this one, it just seemed like event after event after event occurred but I didn't really care what happened to whom, or why, or how. The past novels in the series were also light and sexy, but there was enough character development to draw me in. But it just didn't seem to have that much substance to me. Along with new cover art, it seems like the story lines have gotten a little sexier and lighter. ![]() MaryJanice Davidson prefaced the book with a note to the reader letting us know that this is the first book in a new story arc. It's the seventh book in the series, and unfortunately I felt that it was one of the weakest.
